Chapter Seven

Wesley

“I know it’s taken me a long time to build up the courage to come and see you, but I want you to know that nothing about this process has been easy. I replay that day repeatedly in my mind, and I wish it could've been me. I was ready to give you and Jovie the world, Joy. I was ready to live the rest of my forever with you. For the last two years, it’s just been tough, baby; I want to break down every single day and beg for you to come back, but I know that’s not possible. I typically wake up dreading this day, but something in me knew that I needed to change that this year. I hope you’re up there celebrating and enjoying yourself. Happy Birthday, baby; I love you so much, Joy!” I kissed the top of the rose gold tombstone and wiped my tears as I stared at the last picture she took with a beautiful smile on her face.

“I already know she’s up there taking a shot for us!” Monica patted my back as she stared at the picture of Joy.

“Shit, I hope they got some chaser for her,” I joked to lighten the mood.

“You know your wife. We all miss her, but I know she’s watching over us.” Mo reassured. We spent another two hours visiting Joy until the groundskeeper told us they were getting ready to lock the gates for the night.

Joy and I were only married for nine months before she passed away two minutes after giving birth to our son, Jovie. She lost an immense amount of blood as he was laid on her chest. After giving Jovie and me one last kiss, it was as if she drifted off to sleep, and to this day, I was still begging for her to wake up. I missed her so much; mostly, I wish I had more time with her. Jovie didn’t even get a chance to know his mother outside the womb, and I didn’t feel like that was fair to him, but that was how the cards were dealt for us. I was thankful for the time we spent together and the memories we created. I was even more grateful for the support system I had after her passing.

Mo and Joy were best friends for years, and she made a vow never to leave my side, which I greatly appreciated. Since Joy’s passing, Monica had been an essential part of my and Jovie’s lives, and I couldn’t thank her enough. She had her share of losses, but Monica didn’t allow that to stop her from living her best life.

“Are we cutting mommy’s cake when we get home?” Jovie called out as we walked back to my truck to head home.

“We can do that, son. I want you to blow out the candle and make a wish for her first, though. Can you do that for mommy?” I asked, and my two-year-old nodded his head quickly.

Monica followed us back to my house, where Grace, Joy’s mom, was waiting.
